This custom painted Corvus Corax, the Primarch of the Raven Guard, stands as a masterclass in monochrome and metallic textures.
Created as a premium commission painting project in our Gold level, this miniature captures the "Lord of Shadows" during the height of the Horus Heresy.
As a centerpiece for a Warhammer: The Horus Heresy or a specialized Raven Guard army in Warhammer 40,000, the goal was to avoid a flat black look.
Instead, we focused on a cold, midnight-black armor scheme that utilizes subtle blue and grey highlights to define the Primarch’s sleek, aerodynamic silhouette.
The contrast between the dark, weathered armor, the sharp metallic wings, and the cinematic debris of the base makes this painted Warhammer model a striking portfolio piece for collectors seeking ultimate display quality.

Commission Painting Project: Corvus Corax Raven Guard Primarch
For this commission painting project, the challenge was to make the black armor read as "black" while still showing incredible detail.
We used a series of cold grey and deep sea-blue edge highlights to define the complex layers of the Panoply of the Raven.
This custom paint scheme is elevated by the intricate silver scrollwork and symbols of the XIX Legion, which were carefully picked out to provide a sharp, regal contrast to the dark ceramite. Our miniature painting studio applied a satin finish to the armor, giving it a realistic, hardened feel that reflects the light naturally.
The face of the Primarch was painted with pale, almost spectral skin tones and dark hair, capturing the brooding and intense character of Corvus Corax as described in the lore.
The metallic elements, from the jump pack turbines to the Panoply's integrated weaponry, feature subtle heat staining and oil washes to ground the model in a realistic, war-torn aesthetic.
Sharp Metallic Wings and Dynamic Glow Effects
The most iconic feature of this custom painted model is the massive, mechanical wing structure.
We treated the wing blades with a cold, metallic blue-to-silver gradient, giving them a razor-sharp appearance that feels both high-tech and lethal.
The jump pack exhausts and weapon barrels feature a vibrant orange "heat glow" effect.
By using a white-hot core and layering out to deep oranges and reds, our miniature painting studio simulated the intense energy of Corvus Corax in mid-flight.
This warm glow provides the perfect chromatic counterpoint to the otherwise cold and dark palette of the painted Raven Guard Primarch.
The lightning claws, a signature weapon of the XIX Legion, were painted with crisp silver edges and subtle blue glints to represent their power-field activation, ensuring every lethal detail is visible in painted miniatures photography.
Cinematic Custom Basing: The Fall of Isstvan
The basing for this painted Corvus Corax tells a story of betrayal and survival.
The scenic base depicts the Primarch standing over a defeated traitor marine-specifically a member of the Sons of Horus-amongst the shattered ruins of a battlefield.
The fallen marine is painted in the classic sea-green of the Traitor Legion, providing a strong color contrast to the black and silver of the Raven Guard.
This custom basing is essential for a Primarch model, as it elevates the miniature and adds a sense of scale and narrative weight.
The rocks are weathered with pigments and washes to simulate dust, soot, and the grimy reality of the Isstvan V Drop Site Massacre.
In a commission painted Warhammer army, a base of this caliber ensures the Primarch is the undisputed king of the tabletop, acting as a storytelling anchor for the entire collection.
