Painted Jim Raynor Miniature from StarCraft

Jim Raynor is one of the most recognisable characters in the StarCraft universe, so his miniature naturally became the centrepiece of the painted Terran Starter Set we prepared for Archon Studio.

Rather than painting him in exactly the same bright blue scheme as the regular Terran infantry, we used a darker and more subdued version of the faction colours. This helped Raynor stand apart from the surrounding Marines without making him feel disconnected from the rest of the army.

Dark Terran Powered Armour

The armour was painted using deep blue-grey and dark teal tones.

Large powered armour models can easily lose definition when the colour becomes too dark, especially around the legs and oversized shoulder pads. To prevent that, we highlighted each major armour plate separately and introduced subtle blue reflections along the edges.

The brightest highlights were concentrated around the upper body, helmet frame and front-facing sections of the legs. Areas beneath the arms and between the armour plates were kept considerably darker.

This created a clear sense of volume while preserving the heavy appearance of Raynor’s armour.

Painting Jim Raynor’s Face

Because the miniature is dominated by massive armour plates, the exposed face needed enough contrast to remain visible.

The skin was painted with warm tones, which stand out against the cold armour. Dark hair, eyebrows and facial hair frame the face, while sharper highlights were placed around the forehead, nose and cheeks.

We avoided making the face excessively bright. It needed to attract attention, but still appear naturally positioned inside the shadow created by the armour collar.

Blue Lights and Armour Details

The Terran Marines form the largest part of the starter set. Their blue powered armour was painted with clearly defined panels, cold highlights and darker recesses.

Weapons, ammunition feeds and mechanical joints were kept in dark metallic colours. This allows the blue armour to remain dominant while preserving the industrial character of the models.

The painted Terran Marauders use a darker colour palette and much heavier armour. Their oversized weapon systems and broad silhouettes make them visually distinct from the regular Marines, even when both units are standing together.

A Scenic Base for the Terran Commander

im Raynor was placed on a larger scenic base with raised rock formations.

The elevated position gives the model additional presence without changing the pose or adding unnecessary decorative elements. Muted grey rocks, small grass tufts and restrained purple accents complement the dark armour.

The base also provides a visual connection to the rest of the painted Terran Starter Set, which uses the same rocky battlefield theme across the entire army.

The finished Jim Raynor miniature feels heavier and darker than the standard Terran infantry, while the face, blue lights and elevated base make his role as the central character immediately clear.
