Our miniature painting studio recently finished a full unit of Empire Greatswords, the elite heavy infantry of the Empire. We utilized a custom paint scheme featuring a split burgundy and cream palette. This look provides a regal yet battle-ready appearance that stands out perfectly in large-scale rank-and-file games like Warhammer: The Old World.
Techniques for Painting Slashed Silk and Fabric
The iconic Landsknecht-inspired uniforms of these painted miniatures require careful attention to volume. Our artists used soft layering and recess shading to create depth in the "puffy" sleeves and slashed fabric. The contrast between the deep burgundy and the off-white cream ensures that each individual soldier remains distinct even when the unit is ranked up on the tabletop.
Polished Steel and Plate Armor Effects
A key feature of the Empire Greatswords is their heavy plate armor and massive Zweihänder swords. We opted for a "True Metallic Metal" (TMM) approach, using high-quality silver pigments and dark oil washes to simulate well-maintained but field-worn steel. Each blade has been edge-highlighted to a bright silver finish to catch the light during gameplay.
