21 October 2022The Chaos Gods of Warhammer are most powerful entities of a reality known as the Warp. There are core four Chaos Gods and they appear in both Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy. Why are they so chaotic? Let’s find out! Here are some basic facts for a newbie in Warhammer lore!
Khorne
The Blood God is a god of bloodlust, war, rage, honour of battle and skulls. He stands highest in the Divine Hierarchy and is the embodiment of absolute violence. Khorne derives his power from the desires and acts associated with all things slaughter related. His followers are true warriors who never use psychic powers because (to them) that would be a cowardly move. They favour close combat even against the mightiest of opponents. The most dedicated men who have commited their souls to his bloody embace know that he craves constant bloodshed. Khorne doesn’t care where the blood flows from, only that it will flow for all enternity.
Tzeentch
The Changer of the Ways is a god of change, fate, planning and schemes, lies, sorcery, mutation, hope and knowledge. He draws his strenght from those who wish for change or seek advancement. Although his followers are using him to achieve their dreams, they only play a role in Tzeentch’s own eternal schemes. In reality, he has no grand plan and his purpose is mostly focused on the act of plotting and using mortal souls as his puppets. His realm is described as a crystalline maze that is constantly changing and disorting, leading the people who enter it into unimaginable levels of madness.
Nurgle
The Plague Lord is a god of decay, plague, despair, disease, nature, endurance, compassion, empathy, entropy, death, life and rebirth. He draws his strenght from death and decay, becoming even more powerful as great plagues spread and his followers seek to worsen the disease. He is the only god who cares for his servants, giving them diseases while sheltering from pain and ultimately death. Even though his purpouse sounds depressing, he is a god of life and laughter! There is no death without life and no decay without regeneration.
Slaanesh
The Prince of Pleasure is a god of excess, pleasure, pain, extremes, hedonism, desire, beauty, perfection and love. They are the the youngest of the four gods and can assume male, female or hermaphroditic form. Those who worship them desire either the greatest popularity among their peers or the most ecstatic pleasure beyond imagination. However, as they continue in the service they are in constant serach for greater sensations until only the most decadent and licentious of acts can stimulate their emotions and provide the pleasure they so desire.
Overall, as you can see from their brief descriptions, all of the Chaos Gods are very different from each other. The thing that pushes them close together is their growth from the chaos surrounding the mankind. It all sounds like they should get along well, but there is always some trouble in paradise. The Chaos Gods are in constant rivalry known as the Great Game and we will get to that topic in a later time…
Painting
As a result of a huge amount of gods and their followers, there are a lot of ways to paint their miniatures. Each god has their own, unique color scheme which is observable in all of the things related to them – servants included. Markedly, you can be sure that the whole army will complement each other greatly on the tabletop not only when it comes to their abilities but also, their aesthetics.
On the other hand, you don’t have to limit yourself to a certain color scheme. There is a lot of fun ways to create your own order and mix all of the interesting parts of each god characteristic. Our artists would love to hear your ideas and paint the miniatures in a way you’ve always dreamed of or beyond!
